Adverbs in English grammar

Adverb meaning in Hindi: क्रिया-विशेषण

An adverb is a word in a sentence that modifies or describes or adds more information to:

  • a Verb
  • an Adjective
  • another adverb, or
  • a complete sentence.

Consider one example, Pooja drives is a sentence where "drives" is the verb

Then, what is an Adverb?

Pooja drives carefully. "Carefully" is the adverb.

Adverb = adding more information or modifying a verb. For example,

Pooja drives carefully.

Ritu sings loudly.

He runs fast.

In all the above sentences, we are adding more information to the verb but they are not mandatory to make a sentence.

Let's understand with one more example,

"I love you" vs "I really love you". What do think, which of the two sentences will make more impact on the person?

Obviously, the second one. The adverb "really" adds more emotions to the sentence and emphasizes the verb.

Adverb with verb

Example:

  • He drives carefully.
  • Rakesh sings loudly.
  • He runs fast.

Adverb with Adjective (विशेषण)

Example:

  • She is very beautiful.

Beautiful is the adjective and Very is the adverb.

  • He is very intelligent
  • He is a very kind person.
  • The woman is quite pretty.

Adverb with another adverb

Example:
  • He sings very loudly.

Both "very" and "loudly" are adverbs.

  • He runs so fast.

Adverb modifying a complete sentence

Example:
  • Actually, I don't play cricket.
  • Quickly! we are late.
  • Generally, I don't eat fast food.

Adverb Examples:

Adverbs are underlined.
  • She drives carefully.
  • He ran fast.
  • These are very sweet mangoes.
  • She speaks very loudly.
  • Tom is very tall.
  • The match finished too quickly.
  • I really love you.
  • I really don't care.
  • you are extremely beautiful.
  • He speaks English fluently.

When an adverb is used at the beginning of a sentence, it modifies the sentence.

  • Fortunately, I was well prepared for the exam.
  • Actually, I don't know her.
  • Quickly! we are late.

Position of Adverbs

The usage of Adverbs in a sentence is important because it decides the actual meaning of the sentence.

Using it in the wrong place can change the meaning of the whole sentence.

For example:

1. Only he can speak.  केवल वही बोल सकता है
2. He can only speak.  वह केवल बोल सकता है  (लिख नहीं सकता)

In the above example, the usage of the "only" adverb decides the meaning of the sentence.

So, Place adverbs as close as possible to the words they are supposed to modify or describe
