PAST SIMPLE TENSE

When you talk about something that happened or existed before now (in the past), you can use the Past Simple tense. Past Simple tense is used to talk about an action that is completed

Note: Past Simple tense (or Simple Past tense) is the basic form of past tense in English.

Time in the past can be a few minutes ago, hours ago, Yesterday, a few days back, or even 500 years ago, still you can talk about that using Past Simple tense.

So, Remember that Past simple tense talks about

  • Something that happened in the past.
  • It is finished or completed in the past.


Examples:

  • I saw a movie yesterday.
  • I lived in Australia for five years.
  • I worked there for years.
  • My father died in 2010.
  • He played cricket yesterday.
  • I was scared.



Past Simple Tense with the "Be" verb

The "be" verb in past simple tense is used to talk about your "state of being in the past". For example, I was happy, This is my state of being in the past.

For the "be" verb, In the Past Simple tense, we use "was" and "were".

was - when the subject is I, he, she, it.

were - when the subject is They, we, you, or any Plural subject (my parents).

For Example:

  • John was a teacher.
  • They were right.
  • My parents were at the park.
  • I was very happy yesterday.
  • It was good.

I was happy

We were lucky

He was hungry

They were right

She was ready

You were amazing

Past Simple Tense with the Regular verb

Regular Verb: A verb that follows a regular pattern with different forms of tenses. for example, "live" is a regular verb because its past tense is "lived".

The regular verb in the past tense is formed by adding "-d" or "-ed" in the end.

Whereas "write" is an irregular verb, because its past tense form is "wrote" not "writed".


Now, you know the meaning of the Regular verb, Let's see the Past simple tense with Regular Verb.

Examples:

  • I played cricket yesterday.            - Play is the regular verb.    
  • They watched a movie.
  • We worked together on the project.
  • You exercised for an hour.




Past Simple Tense with the Irregular verb

The verb in which the past tense is not formed by adding the usual "-d" or "-ed" in the end. for example, go has the past form as "went".

Examples:

  • I ate my favorite dish.           - Irregular verb eat.
  • She wrote a story.
  • I bought a book.
  • You came home late.
  • He sent me a message.



Past Simple Tense with the negative form

With the "Be" Verb

We use "was" and "were" for the "be" verb. For negative form, "was not" and "were not" are used.


Examples:

  • I was not hungry.
  • They were not happy.
  • He wasn't home today.                        - wasn't is the short form of was not.
  • They weren't ready to help me.           - weren't is the short form of were not.
  • We weren't willing to go to the party.
  • You weren't there when I needed you the most.
  • It wasn't a good idea at all.



With Regular or Irregular Verbs

For Regular or Irregular verbs in the past simple tense, we simply use "did not" or "didn't".

Note: with "did not", we use the base form of the verb, for example, go, come, see, etc.

Examples:

  • I didn't go there.                - go is the base form.
  • He didn't come yesterday.
  • She didn't pass the exam.
  • They didn't perform together.
  • We didn't want to meet.
  • It didn't work.
  • You didn't help me.



Past Simple Tense with the Question Form

With the 'be' Verb:

Examples:

  • Was he angry?
  • Were they comfortable?
  • Where were you?
  • How was she?
  • Were you late?


With the Irregular or regular verbs

Examples:

  • Did she come here?
  • Did they live here?
  • Did he write this book?
  • Did he do this?
  • Did they win the contest?
  • Did you complete your homework?
  • Did we know each other?



Past Simple Tense with "Wh" Question Form

Here we use "Wh" words to make questions in Past simple tense, for example, What, When, Where, Why, etc.

Examples
  • What did you do last day?
  • Why did you come here?
  • Where did we go last year?
  • When did she complete the task?
