Few and A Few - What is the difference?


Both Few and A Few mean "more than one" or "some" and most of us use them interchangeably. 

We use them to refer to the things or people that can be counted.

What is the difference?

The difference is the intention of saying the sentence.

The intention of saying "Few" is negative and it means "not many" or "hardly any". The speaker has the negative feeling of having less.

For example, "I have few friends". 😒

Here, Speaker has a negative feeling of having "not many" friends and the speaker wants more friends.


The intention of saying "A few" is positive or neutral and it means "some" and the speaker is satisfied with the small number.

For example, "I have a few friends". 😊

Here, Speaker has a positive or neutral feeling or opinion of having at least "some" friends.

Note: Both the sentences are grammatically correct.


More Examples:

  • My boss sent me a few emails yesterday.

    - No negative tone.
    - The tone is neutral.
    - Speaker is satisfied.


  • My boss sent me few emails yesterday.

    - Negative tone and feeling.
    - Was expecting more.
    - Speaker is not satisfied.

  • I'm having a dinner party for a few close friends.
  • I have a few ideas that might help you.
  • There are few resources available.
  • Many guests were invited but few came.



Quite a few

There is an exception to the meaning of "a few" when used in the phrase "quite a few".

Quite a few means "a lot" which is the opposite of "a few" which means "some".

Example:

  • I sold quite a few books.
  • There were quite a few people there.




Final Tip:

Imagine a situation where you are in the sales team of your company and you have to promote a product by mentioning some advantages of using it.

Now, if you say, "There are few advantages of our product". This gives an impression to the clients or customers that your product has "not many" advantages. This gives a negative impression of your product.

So, In this situation, you should use "There are a few advantages of our product".


Bonus: Apart from "few" and "a few", we also have "The few".

The Few

"The Few" means Not many, but all of those.

Example:

  • The few friends I had left the city to study abroad.
  • The few times I met him, he behaved so nicely.
