Subject vs Object in a sentence

A subject is a person or thing that performs the action. In English, the subject is usually before the verb.

On the other hand, an object is a person or thing on which the action is performed by the subject.

The action that the subject is performing on the object is a Verb. All verbs have a subject.

For example:

John is watching a movie.

* John - Subject

* Movie - Object

* Watching - Verb (Action)

Note: Both Subject and object can be a noun, pronoun, or noun phrase.

Sentences without an object

You can also write sentences with only a Subject and a verb.

  • Ramesh played.     - Ramesh (noun) is the subject, Played is the verb.
  • Shweta smiled.
  • He laughed.           - He (pronoun) is the subject, launched is the verb.
  • I enjoyed.

Sometimes, the subject is not doing any action, the Verb gives the information about the subject. This is called the "State of being" or Linking verb.

Examples:

  • I am hungry.
  • She is sad.
  • He is happy.

Sentences without a subject

In Imperative sentences (which is used to convey a command), the subject is usually understood without being explicitly mentioned.

For Example:

  • Come here at once.    (means "You come here at once")

    The subject is understood in this sentence, i.e "You".

  • Don't ever touch my phone.     (The subject is "You")

  • Never forget the person who loves you.

In all the above sentences, the subject is missing but that is understood.

Direct objects and Indirect objects

Direct object:
The direct object is directly affected by the action of the subject.

Example: Ram is reading a book.

The book (object) is directly read by Subject (Ram).

Indirect object: The indirect object that is benefited or affected indirectly by the action of the Subject.

Example: Ram bought Shweta a drink.

Here, Drink is the direct object because Ram bought a drink. But for whom? Ram bought a drink for Shweta.

So, Shweta is benefited or affected by the action of Ram. Shweta is the Indirect object.
