What is an Adjective?
An Adjective is a word in English that describes or modifies a noun (person, place, thing) or a pronoun (He, she, they, etc ) in a sentence.
It can describe the quality, size, shape, feelings, duration, and other features of nouns or pronouns.
Let's understand the meaning of Adjective with an example:
Virat has a car. - Here you know that Virat has a car.
Do you know the color or any other features of the car? No.
Now, here you need an Adjective to describe the car (noun).
Virat has a red car. - Now, you know the color of the car.
Virat has a fast car. - Now, you know the feature/ attribute of the car.
Examples of Adjectives
- Virat has a fast car.
- Virat is a dangerous batsman.
- They have three children.
- She has to complete the whole task.
- Indian players are so hardworking.
- It is an interesting story.
- I am hungry.
- She is beautiful.
- This is my car.
- My job is almost done.
Types of Adjectives
1. Descriptive Adjective
A descriptive adjective is a word that describes nouns and pronouns. It adds a feature or quality to the noun or pronoun.
Examples:
- Rohan is a humble person.
- He has a beautiful wife.
- She is a smart girl.
- I have a red car.
- The dog is hungry.
2. Quantitative Adjective
The Quantitative adjective provides you the information about the quantity of the nouns or pronouns.
Examples:
- He has 20 cars in the garage.
- I have three children.
- There are more than 100 students in the class.
- I have completed the whole task.
3. Proper Adjective
Ramesh, Amazon, America, India, August, Monday, Mumbai, etc are few examples of a Proper noun.
Adjectives made from the proper noun are Proper Adjectives.

Note: Just like a Proper noun, a Proper Adjective also starts with a Capital letter.
Examples:
- I live in India.
- I was born in Uttar Pradesh.
- I like Dominos Pizza.
- Indian people are hard workers.
4. Demonstrative Adjective
This adjective is used when refers to something or someone by using the words like this, that, these, those, etc.
The Demonstrative adjectives always come before the word it describes.
Examples:
- That car is mine.
- This place is so beautiful.
- These students are very smart.
- I remember those days.
5. Ownership or Possession Adjective
This adjective is used to indicate the ownership or possession of something or someone. Some of the most used ownership adjectives are my, his, her, their, your, our, etc.
Examples:
- This is my car.
- Our job is to help them.
- Your dress is very pretty.
- Her dog is very cute.
6. Interrogative Adjective
An Interrogative adjective modifies a noun by asking a question. There are three Interrogative adjectives: what, which, whose.
Examples:
- Which laptop do you use?
- What place do you want to go to?
- Whose book is this?
- What book are you reading?
7. Indefinite Adjective
This type of adjective describes the noun in a non-specific manner. The most common indefinite adjectives are any, each, few, many, most, several, etc.
Examples:
- I like most people at the party.
- There are several good books.
- I don't like cake, but I will have some.
- I will be back in a few days.
8. Compound Adjective
- I work in a multi-storey building.
- I have just finished reading a 300-page book.
- I live in an English-speaking country.
- He is a well-known singer.
