What is a common noun?

A common noun is a generic name of a person, place, or thing. Unlike Proper nouns,  common nouns do not start with a capital letter unless they begin a sentence.

Example: boy, girl, town, city, country, river, lakes, restaurant, mother, father, friend, planet, etc.

Note: "Mumbai" is a Proper noun but the "city" is a common noun.
