Who vs Whom
"Who" is used with the subject and "whom" is used with the object.
"Who" and "whom" are the most confusing pronouns where people generally make mistakes and use them interchangeably.
Actually, there is a simple rule that you have to follow and you will never make any mistakes using these two.
Rule to follow:
When to use who?
When the subject is one of the following: he, she, they, we, I.
When to use whom?
When the object of a verb is one of the following: him, them, her, us, me
The trick to remember:
Before deciding between "Who" and "Whom", try to answer the question.
- If you can give the answer with he, she or they then use Who.
- If you can give the answer using him, them, her then you can use Whom.
Tip: him, them, ends with 'm' and whom also ends with 'm'.
Examples:
____ do you believe?
Ans 1: I believe him. - Correct
Ans 2: I believe he. - Incorrect
We will use "whom" in the above example. "Whom do you believe?"
____ spoke to John?
Ans 1: He spoke to John - Correct
Ans 2: him spoke to John - Incorrect
"Who spoke to John?"
____ do you want to see?
Ans 1: Want to see he. - Incorrect
Ans 2: want to see him. - Correct
"Whom do you want to see?"
____ ate my sandwich?
Ans 1: He ate my sandwich. - Correct
Ans 2: him ate my sandwich - Incorrect
"Who ate my sandwich?"
To ____ should I talk?
Ans 1: I should talk to he/she. - Incorrect
Ans 2: I should talk to him/her. - Correct
"To whom should I talk?"
By ____ is the car driven to school?
Ans 1: Car is driven to school by him/ her. - Correct
Ans 2: Car is driven to school by he/she. - Incorrect
"By whom the car is driven to school?"
Final Tip:
If you still get confused sometimes between "who" and "whom", Just simply use "who" in all the sentences.
What? then why did we learn the differences between the two?
Actually, who can be used at all the places where whom is required but whom is more formal and grammatically correct.
So, If you can remember the rule, you will always be correct. But, if you forget the rule, to save yourself in the situation, you can use "who".
