Usage of WOULD in English
Would is a modal auxiliary verb. There are several uses of "would" in English.
Let's understand them one by one:
The past form of will
The verb "Would" is the past form of "will".
When you say the words spoken by somebody else in the past, about the future, you use would.
For example:
Shweta said, "I will see you at the party tonight". She said this in past.
Now, If you have to tell somebody about what Shweta said, you will say,
"Shweta said, she would see me at the party tonight."
You are saying, "what Shweta said in past" about "what she will do in the future".
More examples:
- He told me that he would come to college.
- Ramesh said that he would not eat dinner.
- I had already informed you that I would reach home by 6 pm.
- You told us that you would throw a party on your birthday.
- She said, she would wear black at the party tonight.
- The manager had warned him that he would fire him.
Repetitive tasks in past
When you want to talk about the situations in the past that you used to do regularly (on repetition).
For example, Your past routines, past habits, whatever you used to do more often.
Examples:
- When I was a kid, I would go to school.
- As a child, I would play all day.
- I remember being neighbors, we would party together.
- In my childhood, my mother would give me lunch and I would share it with my friends.
- After dinner, we would all sit in the hall and chat for hours.
The imaginary situation in the future
An imaginary situation is when you say something that is not true at present, It may be true in the future.
For example:
Shweta would look great wearing this dress.
now, here I am saying that, If Shweta wears this dress, she would look great, but she hasn't worn it yet.
She would be more than happy to receive this award.
We are estimating a situation in the future using would.
More examples:
- I would move to the United States if I spoke English.
- If I were you, I would reach the office on time.
- She would teach you a lesson.
- He would go to Japan once the pandemic ends.
- It would be very expensive to stay in a hotel.
- She would reject your proposal.
- You would pass the exam, Don't worry.
To express your wish
When you want to express your wish, you can use "would" in the sentence.
Examples:
- I wish she would meet me more often.
- I would like to know what I am supposed to do.
- I would love to take part in the event.
- I wish he would come today.
- I wish it would rain tomorrow.
- I would love to meet our prime minister.
Polite questions or offers
You can use "would" to ask polite questions.
Examples:
- Would you like to have a cup of tea?
- Would you like to join us?
- Would you like to come with us to the party?
- Would you mind lending me your bicycle?
- Would you open the door, Please?
Polite Requests
When you want to ask someone to do something for you, You can use would.
Examples:
- Would you please pass me the bottle?
- Would you open the window, Please?
- Would you please leave me alone for a while?
- Would you please come with us?
- Would you mind me sitting here with you guys?
