When to use COULD in English?

The modal verb Could is used in English for several situations, Let's understand them.


To express the possibility in past

Examples:
  • Ram could have helped us.

    राम हमारी मदद कर सकते ऄे।

  • I could have been a lawyer.
  • She couldn't have done this better.
  • They could have taken a cab home.



To express the Past Ability 

Examples:
  • I could run for hours in my twenties.
  • When I was young, I could easily swim.

    जब मैं छोटा ऄा तो मैं आसानी से तैर सकता ऄा।

  • My grandfather could speak several languages.



To give Suggestions

Examples:
  • Ramesh could have spent his vacations in Goa.

    रमेश अपनी छुट्टियां गोवा में बिता सकता ऄा।

  • We could meet at the weekend.
  • He could try and complete his task.
  • You could have come to me for help.



To make Polite requests

COULD is a more polite way of asking questions or make requests.

Examples:
  • Could you please help us?

    क्या आप कृपया हमारी मदद कर सकते हैं?

  • Could I please use your washroom?
  • Could you please call me later?
  • Could you please lend me some cash?




To ask for Permission

Examples:
  • Could I ask you a question?

    क्या मैं आपसे ą¤ą¤• प्रश्न पूछ सकता हूँ?

  • Could we go home now?
  • Could I leave early today?
  • Could we come in sir?
  • Could I use your pen?



To make Offers

Examples:
  • I could give you a lift to the office.
  • I could offer you a better salary.

    मैं आपको ą¤ą¤• बेहतर वेतन दे सकता ऄा।

  • We could have given you all you wanted.



In Conditional sentences

Conditional sentences can also be called Imaginary situations or Unreal situations. These sentences are not real or true at present, They depend on a condition to be true.

Examples:
  • If I had more time, I could complete the task.

    अगर मेरे पास और समय होता, तो मैं काम पूरा कर सकता ऄा।

  • If I had a spare pen, I could give you.
  • I wish I had time, I could have helped you.
  • If I had money, I could travel around the world.
  • If I had money, I could have traveled around the world.




To show regret

We can use COULD to tell about the things that did not happen or to express regret also. 

Examples:
  • She could have been an Engineer.
  • We could have been famous.
  • How could you do this to me?

    तुम मेरे साऄ ऐसा कैसे कर सकते हो?

  • How could someone be so irresponsible?




To talk about Past events

Examples:
  • I couldn't remember his name.
  • I knew they were in the room, I could hear voices inside.

    मुą¤े पता ऄा कि वे कमरे में ऄे, मैं अंदर आवाजें सुन सकता ऄा।

  • The movie was terrible, I could not find a single good scene in the movie.
  • I failed because I couldn't reach the exam on time.



Points to remember:

  • Could cannot be used with another modal verb.

    We could drive to Goa.  - Correct
    We could might drive to goa.    - Incorrect

    Could and might both are modal verbs, They can not be used together.


  • Could and Can both are the correct way of asking questions and make requests but COULD is a more polite way of asking.


  • We don't use COULD to give or refuse permission.

    For example,

    Shweta: Could I leave early today?
    Boss: Yes, you can or No, You can not.   Correct

    Boss: Yes, you could or No, You couldn't.   
    Incorrect
