When to use ON, IN, and AT correctly in English?
ON, IN, and AT are the prepositions and one the most confusing topics for beginners to understand in English.
Let's understand them with examples:
AT
- AT is used to show an exact position or particular place
For example, at the bus stop, at the door, at the entrance gate, I met her at the bus stop, etc. - For events
For example, at the concert, at the party, at reception, etc. - Any place where you are doing something eg. study, work.
For example, at work, at college, at university, etc. - At the table or desk.
"He is sitting at his desk or table" means he is sitting on his chair and the table is in front of him. The book is on the table (above the table).
He is sitting "on the table", which means he is on the top of the table and this is wrong because nobody sits on the top of the table.
Note: "On the table" is different from "at the table". So always use at the table.
Examples:
- John is waiting for you at the bus stop.
- The shop is at the end of the street.
- When will you arrive at the college?
- I arrived at the meeting.
- He sits at the desk.
- He was not at home yesterday.
- She is looking at the park.
- She sat at the table.

For example, on the wall, on the ceiling, on the floor, on the window. etc. - To show some ways of traveling
For example, I like traveling on the bus, on the train, etc. - Television, radio, social media
For example, I like watching movies on TV, on the radio, I am very active on social media. - To say left or right.
For example, The restaurant is on the left.
Examples:
- I like this painting on the wall.
- The book is on the table.
- He is on the way to school.
- She looks pretty with a smile on her face.
- I like spending time on social media.
- I like watching movies on TV.
- I like traveling on the train.
- The restaurant is on the right.
IN
- The preposition "IN" is used for an enclosed space.
For example, in the garden, in a building, in the living room, in the car, in India, in London, etc. - For inside something
For example, in a box, in my pocket, in my wallet, etc.
Examples:
- He is in the garden.
- He is in London.
- I have nothing in my pocket.
- She must be sitting in the car.
- There is an amazing picture in the book.
- I live in India.

On the table vs At the table

That's it. Hope you understood the difference.
